OpenAI's price cuts are pulling coding work away from Anthropic

OpenAI is using steep price cuts to win large coding customers away from Anthropic, and it is working, according to an October 24 report from The Information titled "Anthropic's Margin is OpenAI's Opportunity."

The clearest example is Rippling, the HR software company. In May, Anthropic models handled 57% of the coding work done by Rippling's hundreds of engineers, while OpenAI models handled 16%. Those shares have since flipped: OpenAI now handles 52% and Anthropic 18%. CEO Parker Conrad said the company wanted to cut costs and OpenAI turned out to be cheaper.

Replit made a bigger move. The report says the AI coding platform shifted most of its AI spending from Anthropic to OpenAI after OpenAI offered a discount of more than 30% on a contract worth over $100 million a year. Coverage of the report adds that Anthropic had declined to extend Replit's earlier discount without a higher spending commitment. Replit CEO Amjad Masad said onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 16 that the decision was based on "cost, partnership, and performance," though a person familiar with the deal told TechCrunch the Anthropic partnership was still in place. The Decoder also reports that DataCamp's CEO said OpenAI pricing cut his costs by 80 to 90 percent.

None of these deals has been confirmed by OpenAI or Anthropic, and the Rippling numbers describe shares of one company's workload, not total spend.

Why it matters for developers: the coding model market is now a price war between two labs whose top models trade benchmark wins every few weeks. That is good news for anyone buying tokens. Large customers are clearly willing to route work to whichever model is cheapest for good enough output, which means routing layers, evals on your own tasks and multi-provider setups are worth more than loyalty to a single vendor.

What's next: watch whether Anthropic answers with its own enterprise discounts or price cuts, and whether OpenAI can keep these rates once the contracts come up for renewal.
