Apple will release a beta of Apple Intelligence in China later this month, Tim Cook confirmed in an interview in Shanghai on October 15. Cook said the first features and the Alibaba Qwen models behind them have received regulatory approval, ending a long wait for Apple's AI features in its second-biggest market.
The first batch is modest: live translation, writing tools and photo cleanup. The redesigned Siri assistant is not included, and reports say the Gemini-powered Siri upgrade Apple is rolling out elsewhere will skip China. A public rollout is expected in December, after the beta.
The structure of the deal is the interesting part. Reports say Alibaba-built filters let Chinese regulators approve model updates, which means Apple's AI in China runs on a local model under local oversight. That is a different product, with a different update path, from the Apple Intelligence used in the rest of the world.
Our take
Apple is shipping two AI stacks now, one for China and one for everyone else. Expect that split to become the template for any global AI product that wants into China.
