How to automate browser tasks with Claude and Playwright with Claude Quickstarts

Let Claude navigate websites, read page content and fill forms through a Playwright-backed browser tool.

Authorization notice. Claude Quickstarts is dual-use. Only use it on software, sites and systems you own or have explicit permission to test.

Reverse engineering. Automated browsing can reach sites and accounts you do not own, so run it only against pages you are allowed to automate and review what it submits in forms.

Who it is forA developer who needs to automate repetitive web tasks such as reading pages or filling forms and wants a reference implementation to adapt.

The problemWriting browser automation for each site by hand is slow, and it is hard to tell how an AI model should drive a browser safely.

The outcomeA working browser automation demo in which Claude navigates a site, inspects elements, extracts content and fills a form.

What you need first

  • A Claude API key, available by signing up at console.anthropic.com
  • Git, to clone the repository
  • The runtime and dependencies listed in the README of the specific quickstart you choose
  • For the daily brief use case: Slack and GitHub access, configured through the project's own setup

Steps

  1. Clone the Claude Quickstarts repository to your machine.
  2. Open the browser-use-demo directory and read its README.
  3. Install the dependencies described in that README.
  4. Set your Claude API key as an environment variable.
  5. Run the demo and give Claude a simple task, such as extracting content from one page.

Prompt for your agent

Work in the anthropics/claude-quickstarts repository. Open the browser-use-demo quickstart, follow its README to install dependencies, set the Claude API key and start the demo. Give it one read-only task on a page you control and report whether it extracted the expected content.

Caveat. The README describes this as a reference implementation, so review the project's own guidance before pointing it at production sites or logged-in accounts.
