How to cut Claude Code session size in Claude Desktop by leaving out past images with Context Attachment Manager

Install the plugin from the command line, start a new Code tab session, and uncheck old images to shrink each request.

Who it is forA user of the Code tab in Claude Desktop who works on a long session with many screenshots or generated images and sees slow or stalled replies.

The problemClaude Code sends the whole session history with every request, so images from earlier turns keep growing each request.

The outcomeImages you uncheck are replaced with placeholders in later requests, and the session continues without starting over.

What you need first

  • The Codex desktop app, or the Code tab in Claude Desktop signed in with your Claude subscription
  • Node 24 or later on your PATH, only if you use Claude Desktop without Codex
  • The claude command from Claude Code, only for the Claude Desktop install path

Steps

  1. Run claude plugin marketplace add chipfighter/context-attachment-manager once.
  2. Run claude plugin install codex-attachment-manager@codex-attachment-manager.
  3. Start a new session in the Code tab of Claude Desktop, since the plugin only points sessions started after install at the engine.
  4. Open the Context Attachment Manager panel, which opens in the built-in browser, and uncheck the images you no longer need.
  5. Send your next message and check the card at the top for the estimated request size and savings.

Prompt for your agent

Using the repo chipfighter/context-attachment-manager, add the marketplace and install the plugin for Claude Code, then start a new session in Claude Desktop's Code tab for the project <project folder>. Uncheck the images from earlier turns in the panel and confirm that the savings card shows a smaller estimated request than before.

Caveat. Claude Desktop does not ship Node, so without Codex you must install Node 24 or later first, and the plugin was tested on Windows only.
