Who it is forA developer who already uses Copilot Chat and wants access to models from other providers without learning a new chat interface.
The problemCopilot Chat only offers the models in its own picker, and you want Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek or Qwen models in the same chat.
The outcomeYour selected OmniRoute models appear in the Copilot Chat model dropdown and work for chat and agent mode.
What you need first
- VS Code 1.104 or later, or a VS Code fork such as Cursor, Windsurf or VSCodium
- Node.js with npm, to install the OmniRoute CLI
- A running OmniRoute server, local or remote, with at least one provider configured or the built-in free ones
Steps
- Run
npm install -g omniroutein a terminal. - Run
omnirouteand open the dashboard at http://localhost:20128 to add your providers or use the built-in free ones. - In VS Code, search the Extensions view for "OmniRoute" and install the extension.
- Open Copilot Chat, click the model picker, choose Manage Models, select OmniRoute and tick the models you want.
Prompt for your agent
Using the diegosouzapw/OmniCopilot README, set up the OmniRoute extension for a VS Code install located at <vscode-profile-path>. Confirm the OmniRoute server answers at http://localhost:20128 and report the number of models listed in the status-bar or Activity Bar panel. Verify that at least one OmniRoute model appears in the Copilot Chat model picker after Manage Models is used.
Caveat. Inline code completions and embeddings-based features still require GitHub Copilot, so this covers chat and agent mode only.
