Credentials. Credential-shaped strings are scrubbed only by heuristics, so check the folder for leftover secrets before an agent reads it.
Who it is forA knowledge worker who opens an AI assistant in the afternoon and has to re-explain the emails, tickets and calls from the morning.
The problemThe context from the day sits on screen and never gets written down, so the assistant starts with a fraction of what you saw.
The outcomeYour assistant reads the day's record and the Notes page through MCP, so it can answer from what you actually worked on.
What you need first
- A Mac on macOS 14 or later with Apple Silicon
- Accessibility permission granted to Ambient Context
- A folder you choose to hold the record, ideally outside iCloud Drive
- An agent CLI you already have (Claude Code, Codex or opencode) for Knowledge and Notes
- An MCP client such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or Zed for the tool connection
Steps
- Download the signed, notarised DMG from Releases, drag Ambient Context.app to Applications and open it.
- Grant Accessibility when asked, then choose a folder to save the record in.
- Run
claude mcp add --scope user --transport stdio ambient-context -- "/Applications/Ambient Context.app/Contents/MacOS/ambient-context" mcp - Open the Agent tab, pick an agent CLI and press Process day on a recorded day.
- Ask your assistant what you worked on today and check that its answer cites the record.
Prompt for your agent
Using the ambient-context MCP server from the dedupedai repo of dragthelake/ambient-context, read the day <placeholder> with the reading-days tools and summarise the work in five bullet points. Expected output: five bullets, each tied to a block in the record. Verify that every bullet names an app or file path that appears in the Days folder for that date.
Caveat. Read tools work whether or not the app is running, but capture only happens while the eye in the menu bar is open.
