Who it is forAn indie founder who needs keyword and backlink data a few times a month, not a $100+ subscription.
The problemSEO suites charge a flat monthly fee whether you run two reports or two hundred.
The outcomeYour own OpenSEO instance with keyword research, rank tracking, backlinks and site audits, billed per request by DataForSEO.
What you need first
- A DataForSEO API key (you pay DataForSEO per request when self hosting)
- Docker on your own server or computer, or a Cloudflare account (works on the free plan)
- Optional: Claude Code, Codex or ChatGPT for the MCP server and Agent Skills
Steps
- Get a DataForSEO API key as docs/DATAFORSEO_API_KEY.md explains
- Follow docs/SELF_HOSTING_DOCKER.md to start the prebuilt image on your server, or on Coolify, Portainer or Dokploy
- Open it in a browser; the first visitor creates the admin account
- Invite teammates with invitation links
- Run a keyword research and a site audit to check the key works
Prompt for your agent
Self-host every-app/open-seo on <server> with Docker following docs/SELF_HOSTING_DOCKER.md, add my DataForSEO key, create the admin account, and run a site audit on <domain>. Report the setup steps you took.
Caveat. This card is written from the every-app/open-seo README, not from a test run by Deduped. Before you start, make sure you have a DataForSEO API key. Check the repo for newer instructions before you rely on these steps.
