How to run AI actions on selected text with local or API models with Openclip

Send selected text to a local Ollama model, Apple Intelligence, or an OpenAI or Anthropic key from the popup.

Credentials. Cloud use needs your own OpenAI or Anthropic key, so keep that key private and do not paste it into shared notes or logs.

Who it is forA user who wants summaries or rewrites of selected text and needs to decide where that text is allowed to go.

The problemGetting AI help on text usually means copying it into a chat window and pasting the answer back.

The outcomeAI actions run from the popup on the text you selected, using the provider you chose.

What you need first

  • A Mac running macOS 14 or later
  • Accessibility permission granted to OpenClip
  • Homebrew for the recommended install

Steps

  1. Install OpenClip with brew install --cask openclip and grant it Accessibility permission.
  2. Choose a provider: a local Ollama model, Apple Intelligence, or an OpenAI or Anthropic key.
  3. If you use a cloud provider, add your own OpenAI or Anthropic key in OpenClip.
  4. Select text in any app and pick an AI action from the contextual bar.
  5. Check which provider handled the request before you send sensitive text.

Prompt for your agent

Using the OpenClip repo at https://github.com/ganeshmshetty/openclip, configure one AI provider named <provider> and run an AI action on the selected text <target text> from the contextual bar. Expected output: a model response for that text shown in the popup. Verify that only the provider you chose is configured.

Caveat. The README calls OpenClip privacy-first with 100% local execution, but cloud keys send selected text to that provider, so use a local model for private text.
