How to set up a family TV with a clean, ad-free home screen with Cleanyourtv

Turn a sponsored-ad Android or Google TV into a clean home screen over Wi-Fi, with no root and nothing uninstalled.

Authorization notice. Cleanyourtv is dual-use. Only use it on software, sites and systems you own or have explicit permission to test.

Remote script. The assistant runs ADB commands on the TV, so review the disabled-package list before you accept it.

Who it is forA family tech helper whose parents or relatives have a TV that shows ads before Netflix and needs a simpler home screen.

The problemManufacturer launchers push sponsored rows and ads ahead of the apps people actually open.

The outcomeA TV with a black home screen, a dock of four chosen apps, and manufacturer bloat disabled rather than uninstalled.

What you need first

  • An Android TV or Google TV set on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer
  • USB debugging turned on in the TV's developer options
  • A computer with a coding assistant that has shell access, such as Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI
  • The repo's PROMPT.md file, which you paste into the assistant

Steps

  1. On the TV, go to Settings, Device Preferences, About, press OK on Build seven times, then turn on USB debugging under Developer options.
  2. Keep the TV on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
  3. Paste PROMPT.md from the repo into Claude Code, Codex or Gemini CLI and fill in your TV model.
  4. Accept "Allow USB debugging?" on the TV, then answer the checklist about your apps, the four dock apps, the voice assistant, Chromecast and updates.
  5. Check the screenshots the assistant pulls from the TV and confirm the new home screen is the default.

Prompt for your agent

Using the Gathin23/cleanyourtv repo as context, follow PROMPT.md for the TV model <tv-model> on the local Wi-Fi network. Back up the installed package list and settings, disable the manufacturer ad and telemetry packages with pm disable-user, and install the launcher as the default home screen. Expected output: a backup of the package list, a list of disabled packages, and confirmation that the launcher is the default home. Verify that no packages were uninstalled.

Caveat. The bloat differs by brand, and some China-market TCL sets refuse to install any launcher at all.
