How to run AI Builder locally and fork it to customize with Builder

Clone the repo, install dependencies, start the dev server, and change the Builder for your own use.

Who it is forA developer who wants a self-hosted or customized AI site Builder, or who is evaluating an open-source alternative to hosted builders.

The problemHosted AI builders limit how much of the tool you can change, and you cannot easily adapt the Builder itself.

The outcomeA local running copy of AI Builder that you can modify under the Apache License 2.0.

What you need first

  • A web browser for the live demo at https://builder.puter.com/
  • Git, Node.js, and npm for running the repo locally
  • A project idea described in plain language
  • For MCP connections: the URL of a remote MCP server you want the AI to use

Steps

  1. Run git clone https://github.com/HeyPuter/builder
  2. Run cd builder
  3. Run npm install
  4. Run npm run dev
  5. Open the local development address the dev server prints and make a small change to confirm it updates.

Prompt for your agent

Clone the HeyPuter/builder repo, run npm install and npm run dev, then change <target file or feature> to add a small customization. Expected output: the builder running locally with your change visible. Verify that the dev server starts without errors and the change appears after reloading the page.

Caveat. The README gives no Node.js version or dev server address, so check the terminal output and the repo's package files if the commands fail.
