How to make a model's dimensions adjustable without code with SOMA

Have the agent expose key values as parameters so you can change a size without touching the code.

Who it is forA designer who wants to resize a finished part for a different project or printer without reopening the code.

The problemChanging one dimension of a generated model normally means editing the script or asking the agent again.

The outcomeA model where chosen dimensions can be changed in SOMA and the model rebuilds with the new values.

What you need first

  • Windows, Linux, or macOS (Apple Silicon) with a SOMA package downloaded from somacad.app/download or the releases page
  • A CLI agent such as Claude Code, OpenCode, Codex CLI or Gemini CLI, installed and logged in by you
  • About 1 GB of free disk space for the installed app

Steps

  1. Open the model in SOMA with the agent running in the terminal.
  2. Ask the agent to make the dimensions you care about adjustable parameters.
  3. Change a parameter value in SOMA and check the 3D view after the rebuild.
  4. Repeat for other values, then export the model from the menu.

Prompt for your agent

In the SOMA model folder for <model name>, make the values <dimension list> in the model file into adjustable parameters, run `soma build`, and confirm that the build succeeds. Verify that each parameter is listed in SOMA and that changing one value changes the model size.

Caveat. The README says file formats and the soma API may still change between 0.x versions, so parameter setups may need updating after upgrades.
