How to run a private AI assistant on your own machine with Ciele

Start the full Ciele stack locally with one bootstrap script and sign in as the owner.

Credentials. The bootstrap script generates secrets for the database and app, so store the generated values somewhere safe and do not commit them to version control.

Who it is forA developer or ops engineer who needs a self-hosted assistant platform and does not want to send content to a hosted Ciele service.

The problemSetting up a multi-part AI app with a database, migrations, and secrets by hand is slow and error-prone.

The outcomeA running Ciele instance where the first account you create owns its organization.

What you need first

  • A shell on a machine where ./deploy/bootstrap.sh can run
  • Git to clone the repository
  • Docker Desktop, if you use the Ciele Desktop app on macOS
  • Optional: an OpenAI chat and embeddings compatible server, such as a local model runner, if you do not want to use a hosted AI vendor

Steps

  1. Clone the Ciele repository from GitHub (the README clone line is truncated here, so use the repo URL shown on the GitHub page), then run cd ciele.
  2. Run ./deploy/bootstrap.sh to generate secrets, start the database, apply migrations, and boot the app.
  3. Open the app address shown in the output, sign up, and keep the account you create as the organization owner.
  4. Optional: run ./deploy/bootstrap.sh --seed to start from populated demo content. (inferred, check the README)
  5. Point the app at a local server that speaks the OpenAI chat and embeddings API, using the settings described in the self-hosting docs at docs.ciele.app.

Prompt for your agent

In the ciele repository, run ./deploy/bootstrap.sh on <target machine>, then report the URL where the app is running and whether the database migrations finished without errors. Verify that the app responds at that URL before reporting success.

Caveat. The README's clone command is truncated in the source, so the exact repository URL must be taken from GitHub.
