How to use Python SDK: what you can do with it

What is Python SDK? The MCP Python SDK is the official Python implementation of the Model Context Protocol. It builds MCP servers that expose tools, resources and prompts to any MCP host and MCP clients that connect to any server, over stdio, Streamable HTTP and SSE. Type hints become the schema, and the optional cli extra adds the mcp command with mcp dev, mcp run and mcp install.

How do I use it? Install with uv add "mcp[cli]"; then create server.py with an MCPServer, an add tool and a greeting resource, as in the README; open it in the Inspector with uv run mcp dev server.py. Full steps below.

3 use cases

Quick start with Python SDK

  1. Check you have what it needs: Python 3.11 or later; uv or pip; The cli extra for the mcp command-line tool.
  2. Open modelcontextprotocol/python-sdk on GitHub and read the README and license.
  3. Install with uv add "mcp[cli]"
  4. Create server.py with an MCPServer, an add tool and a greeting resource, as in the README
  5. Open it in the Inspector with uv run mcp dev server.py
  6. Call add with a=1 and b=2 and check you get 3 back

These steps come from our top use case, Build an MCP server and test it in the Inspector, which also has a copy-paste agent prompt.
