Let Claude Code query Postgres through the dbx MCP server and found filtered deletes allowed by default
On a 5,000 order test database, Claude Code answered revenue per country in 5 dbx tool calls and about 12 seconds, matching psql to the cent. A filtered DELETE removed 1,000 rows until the MCP server was set to read only.

Installed the dbx CLI and MCP server, connected SQLite and exported agent context and DBML
A step by step run of dbx 0.4.102: a health check, a SQLite connection where the file path goes in host, schema describe, bounded read only queries in JSON and CSV, context and DBML exports, and the official agent skill install.

Quick start with DBX
- Check you have what it needs: macOS, Windows or Linux desktop, Docker for team access, or the web version; An AI provider for the SQL assistant: Claude, OpenAI or a local model via Ollama; Node.js (npx) for the MCP server.
- Open t8y2/dbx on GitHub and read the README and license.
- Install DBX and set up your connections in the app
- Run
npx @dbx-app/mcp-serveronce to check it starts - Add the DBX entry to your .mcp.json with command npx and args -y @dbx-app/mcp-server
- In DBX Settings, MCP, set the connection allowlist and choose Read only
These steps come from our top use case, Let Claude Code or Cursor query your databases, read only, which also has a copy-paste agent prompt.

Questions about DBX
What is DBX?
DBX is a 25 MB cross-platform database client for 100+ databases, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Redis, MongoDB, DuckDB and ClickHouse, with consoles for Kafka, RabbitMQ and MQTT. It has a built-in AI SQL assistant that works with Claude, OpenAI or local models via Ollama, schema tools such as ER diagrams and schema diff, and a separate MCP server so coding agents can query the connections you set up in DBX. It is an open-source project on GitHub: https://github.com/t8y2/dbx.
How do I use DBX?
Install DBX and set up your connections in the app; then run npx @dbx-app/mcp-server once to check it starts; add the DBX entry to your .mcp.json with command npx and args -y @dbx-app/mcp-server. The use cases on this page give the full steps and a copy-paste agent prompt for each job.
