How to investigate a Grafana alert with an AI assistant with Official MCP Servers

Use the official Grafana MCP server to search dashboards and query datasources while you look into an incident.

Who it is forAn on-call engineer who received a Grafana alert and needs to find the relevant dashboards and data quickly.

The problemSwitching between dashboards, datasources and notes slows down the first minutes of an incident.

The outcomeThe assistant lists the related dashboards, runs the queries you choose, and returns a short summary of what the data shows.

What you need first

  • An account with the vendor of the product you want to connect (for example CircleCI, Grafana or Neon)
  • An MCP-capable AI client such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, as named in the README
  • Access credentials or permissions the vendor's MCP server asks for, set up according to that server's own docs

Steps

  1. Open the directory and find the entry for Grafana (grafana/mcp-grafana).
  2. Follow the setup steps in that repository to connect it to your Grafana instance.
  3. Add the server to your MCP client.
  4. Ask the assistant to search dashboards for the service named in the alert.
  5. Ask it to query the matching datasource for the alert window and summarize the trend.

Prompt for your agent

Using the Grafana MCP server listed in VoltAgent/official-mcp-servers, search dashboards for <service-name> and query the related datasource for the last hour. Return a short summary of the metric trend and the dashboard names. Verify that each dashboard you cite was returned by the search.

Caveat. The server needs access to your Grafana instance, so only connect it to an instance your role is allowed to read.
