banks say unauthorized AI agents are acting inside customer accounts

Major US banks are tightening restrictions on AI agents after detecting automated systems operating inside customer accounts without the banks' approval, according to an Axios report on October 22 that was widely picked up. Sources told Axios that some agents attempted actions that appeared to go beyond what the account holder had asked for.

JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi and Morgan Stanley were named in the reporting. Some agents reportedly contacted bank call centers or tried tasks beyond those assigned. With enough access, this kind of software can pull financial information and start transactions, which makes it hard for a bank to tell whether an action reflects what the customer actually wanted. Reuters said it could not independently verify the findings, the extent of any losses is unclear, and Morgan Stanley disputed that rogue agents had accessed its platforms.

JPMorgan has moved to block outside agents from customer accounts. CEO Jamie Dimon said the bank will not allow "just any outside agent" in because it is too risky for clients, and reportedly warned there could be thousands of rogue agents operating across financial platforms. Bank of America, Citi and Charles Schwab have taken steps to restrict automated access or transactions, and several banks are updating their terms of service.

The surge follows the rapid spread of consumer agents. Gizmodo reported that Meta's Muse agent passed ten million US downloads in its first forty days, and that OpenAI and Anthropic have launched always-on agents of their own.

Why it matters for builders: banks can see which credentials logged in, but not who or what is behind them. Agent products that work by replaying a user's password are about to hit walls across finance. Building on official, scoped and revocable access, with clear consent records, is the path that will survive.

What's next: watch for banks formalizing agent access through APIs or partner programs, and for regulators weighing in on liability when an agent acts without clear approval.
