Barclays is cutting 5,000 jobs as part of a wider push to reduce costs. The bank says artificial intelligence is starting to create efficiency, and its executives describe the cost-cutting plans as being driven by advances in AI.

The cuts equal about 5% of the bank's 93,000 global staff. Executives confirmed that 1,000 workers have already gone since the start of the year, so the 5,000 figure includes roughly a fifth that has already happened. Other coverage of the announcement says the reductions run through to the end of 2026.

The announcement came alongside a jump in quarterly profits. One report put the profit rise at 12%, while noting that UK banks are bracing for a tax increase in the upcoming budget. So the job cuts are not a response to losses. They sit next to growing earnings and a stated aim of lowering the cost base.

The bank has not been described in these accounts as replacing named roles with specific AI tools, and the material does not break down which departments or countries will lose jobs. What is clear is the framing: a large, established financial institution is tying headcount reductions directly to AI efficiency gains, rather than to weak results.

Our take

Barclays is saying the quiet part out loud: it is linking a 5% headcount cut to AI while profits are rising. Expect other large employers to face pressure to explain how much of their own cost savings come from automation.
