How to switch Claude to terse mode for heads-down work with Attention Span

Use the Spartan style to get blunt, compressed replies during focused coding with no conversational padding.

Who it is forAn engineer in a focused coding block who wants only the signal from Claude Code and no conversation.

The problemEven with a friendly style, replies can carry extra warmth and transitions that slow down heads-down work.

The outcomeClaude gives maximum-compression replies with arrows and bold, no cushioning, so you get the signal quickly.

What you need first

  • Claude Code installed and working
  • A terminal to run the install commands
  • Internet access to GitHub for the plugin or the curl download

Steps

  1. Install the plugin with /plugin marketplace add alexgreensh/attention-span and /plugin install attention-span
  2. Type /spartan to use the style for one conversation, or set Spartan under /config as the Output style
  3. Ask your coding question and read the compressed reply
  4. Switch back with /attention-kind or another style when you want a fuller explanation

Prompt for your agent

Using the repo alexgreensh/attention-span, install the attention-span plugin in Claude Code and use the Spartan style with /spartan, then ask Claude <your coding question>. Expected output: a terse, imperative reply with arrow-marked points and bold words, and no warm transitions. Verify that the reply contains no filler sentences before the answer.

Caveat. Spartan is built for heads-down work where signal matters more than conversation, so it is not a fit for teaching or detailed explanations.
