How to measure whether an NPC voice change really helped with NPC Talk

Use the voice-likeness-eval skill to score a cloned voice against held-out real clips before claiming it improved.

Short answer: Install the skills, for example npx skills add https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk; then check the voice server with npctalk health; ask the voice-likeness-eval skill to measure the current voice against held-out real clips. All steps.

Authorization notice. NPC Talk is dual-use. Only use it on software, sites and systems you own or have explicit permission to test.

Voice cloning. Only clone and evaluate voices from recordings you have the rights to.

Who it is forA modder tuning cloned NPC voices who keeps hearing mixed opinions on whether a change sounds better.

The problemJudging voice quality by ear is unreliable, and a thin-sounding clone could come from the reference clip or the model.

The outcomeSpeaker similarity and word error numbers over enough runs, showing whether the change helped.

What you need first

  • A game you own, ideally single-player (the README says never inject into online games with anti-cheat)
  • Git, Python 3.10+, uv and ffmpeg
  • A Modal account for the GPU voice server, with the NPCVOICE_TOKEN environment variable set
  • A fal key (FAL_KEY) for speech-to-text and the MCP server
  • A Cerebras key (CEREBRAS_API_KEY) for the NPC's lines
  • Optional: a TypeSafe key (TYPESAFE_API_KEY) for actions and spoken orders
  • Windows and the .NET SDK (8+) only if you follow the GTA V example

Steps

  1. Install the skills, for example npx skills add https://github.com/christos-antono/NPCTalk
  2. Check the voice server with npctalk health
  3. Ask the voice-likeness-eval skill to measure the current voice against held-out real clips
  4. Make your change (new reference clip, settings or model) and measure again
  5. Keep the change only if similarity improves across enough runs

Prompt for your agent

Using christos-antono/NPCTalk's voice-likeness-eval skill, measure speaker similarity and word error for my NPC voice <name> before and after switching the reference clip, over enough runs to be confident, and tell me which to keep.

Caveat.
