How to find competitor appearances and missed citation opportunities with Cited

Track competitor domains in AI answers and surface prompts where your brand is absent.

Who it is forA content or competitive marketing manager who wants to know which rival brands AI assistants recommend and where the brand is missing.

The problemTeams guess which prompts they are losing to competitors, so they miss chances to earn citations.

The outcomeA review queue in the inbox and notebook showing competitor events and missed-opportunity prompts with stored response snapshots.

What you need first

  • Docker Compose v2
  • Node.js 22 or newer
  • About 4 GB RAM recommended
  • A domain and brand you want to monitor
  • DataForSEO API credentials, only if you want live monitoring instead of mock mode

Steps

  1. Run npm run self-host:up and sign in after creating the owner at /setup
  2. Add your brand domain, then add competitors in the web app
  3. Add the prompts that matter and choose the AI surfaces to scan
  4. Wait for the worker to run scans, then open the inbox to review competitor appearances and missed opportunities
  5. Save findings to the notebook and use the evidence ledger exports for reporting

Prompt for your agent

In the cited-cc/cited repo, after self-hosting, add <your-brand-domain> as the brand, add <competitor-domain> as a competitor, and add the prompts listed in <prompt-file>. Report the competitor events and missed-opportunity items found in the inbox. Verify that each item links to a stored response snapshot.

Caveat. Results depend on the prompts you configure and the provider you select, and Cited does not monitor every AI answer everywhere.
