How to try AI citation monitoring with safe mock data with Cited

Self-host Cited and run a first scan on fictional data before connecting any live provider.

Who it is forA marketing lead or developer evaluating whether citation monitoring fits their workflow, with no provider account yet.

The problemIt is hard to judge an AI citation tool before seeing how prompts, scans, and evidence look in practice, and live providers need paid credentials.

The outcomeA running local Cited instance with an owner account and one monitored prompt producing scan results in mock mode.

What you need first

  • Docker Compose v2
  • Node.js 22 or newer
  • About 4 GB RAM recommended
  • A domain and brand you want to monitor
  • DataForSEO API credentials, only if you want live monitoring instead of mock mode

Steps

  1. Run npm ci
  2. Run npm run self-host:up
  3. Run npm run self-host:token and copy the bootstrap token
  4. Open http://localhost:3000/setup, create the first owner, then sign in at /sign-in
  5. Follow the first monitor tutorial at docs/getting-started/first-monitor.md to add the fictional domain cited-test.example, a competitor, and prompts in mock mode

Prompt for your agent

In the cited-cc/cited repo, follow the Quickstart and first monitor tutorial to self-host Cited in mock mode and add the fictional domain cited-test.example with one prompt. Report the local URL and the scan result, and confirm each mock result is labeled [MOCK].

Caveat. Mock mode uses fictional data and makes no external provider calls, so it shows the workflow but not real AI answers about your brand.
