Who it is forSolo creator paying monthly for a cloud voice-cloning service and uneasy about uploading voice recordings
The problemCloud voice tools charge monthly and send your voice data to someone else's servers.
The outcomeA working local app that turns typed text into speech in a cloned or designed voice, with nothing leaving your machine.
What you need first
- macOS, Windows or Linux desktop (Intel Mac runs the UI only and needs a remote backend)
- NVIDIA GPU (CUDA) or Apple Silicon (Metal) recommended; CPU-only works but is slower and needs about 5 GB free disk
- Git, Node.js 22+, Bun and Rust/Cargo only if building from source
- Speech models are downloaded on demand through the app; no paid keys or accounts required
Steps
- Run
curl -fsSL https://voicestudio.sh/install | shon macOS or Linux, orirm https://voicestudio.sh/install | iexin PowerShell on Windows. - Open the app and go to the Voice cloning workspace.
- Choose a bundled voice or add a clean reference recording, then install the required model when prompted.
- Type your text and generate the audio.
Prompt for your agent
Install the VoiceStudio Electron app on this device and verify it works, following https://github.com/debpalash/VoiceStudio/blob/main/docs/install/agent.md. Confirm a test generation produces audio, and ask me before any model download.
Caveat. The app is AGPL-3.0 but model weights carry separate terms (some reports cite non-commercial licenses), so check the model notices in Model Manager before any paid work.

More with VoiceStudio
- Dub a video into another language with timed speech Feed a video to the dubbing workspace and get a translated voice track that lines up with the original timing.
- Give your AI agent a local text-to-speech tool through MCP Expose the local API and MCP server so a coding or chat agent can generate speech on demand.
- Run voice generation on an older laptop with no graphics card Use the CPU build to clone and generate voices on hardware without a dedicated GPU, trading speed for access.
- Turn a finished manuscript into an audiobook Use the audiobook workflow to render a long text into narrated audio with your chosen voice.
- Design a brand-new voice from a text description Describe the voice you want and generate it, with no reference recording needed.
- Batch-produce voiceovers from a watched folder Use reusable recipes and watch folders to render many scripts to audio without manual clicks.
- Transcribe interviews and dictate text without the cloud Run transcription and the floating dictation widget locally so recordings and speech stay on your machine.
