How to let an AI agent pull IDX stock briefs over MCP with Idx

Expose Idx as MCP tools so an agent can answer questions about IHSG stocks with live tool calls.

Who it is forA developer or analyst who uses an AI agent daily and wants it to answer Indonesian stock questions from real data rather than memory.

The problemGeneral AI models do not have current IDX prices, fundamentals or news, so their answers about a stock can be out of date.

The outcomeAn agent that calls Idx tools such as idx_brief and idx_fundamental and answers with figures and the source timestamp.

What you need first

  • Rust 1.88 or newer for cargo install, or Node.js and npm for the npm route
  • An internet connection for the first run (offline mode serves cached data only)
  • A terminal on Linux, macOS or Windows

Steps

  1. Install Idx with npm install -g github:fzn0x/idx or cargo install ihsg-cli.
  2. Run idx mcp setup to get the registration recipe for your agent harness. (inferred, check the README)
  3. Start the server with idx mcp over stdio, or with idx mcp --http ADDR --token T for streamable HTTP. (inferred, check the README)
  4. Ask the agent for a stock brief, for example for BBCA, and check that it calls idx_brief.

Prompt for your agent

Connect to the idx MCP server from the fzn0x/idx repo and call idx_brief for <ticker such as BBCA>. Summarise the quote, verdict, returns against IHSG, top holders and headlines in plain language. Verify that the answer quotes the last trade time from the tool result and says the data is delayed.

Caveat. The README lists 36 MCP tools and registration recipes for 25 agent harnesses, but it does not name each agent, so check the setup output for your own harness.
