How to connect your agent to GitHub with the hosted MCP server with GitHub MCP Server

Point your MCP host at GitHub's remote server and sign in, with no local install.

Short answer: Add a server named github of type http with the URL https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ to your host's MCP config; then sign in with OAuth, or pass a personal access token in the Authorization header; ask the agent about open issues, recent commits or a PR. All steps.

Credentials. A personal access token grants whatever scopes you gave it; use the narrowest scopes and never paste it into a chat.

Who it is forA developer who wants the agent to read repos and manage issues without copy-pasting links.

The problemAgents cannot see issues, PRs or CI unless you paste them in by hand.

The outcomeAn agent that can query your repos, issues, PRs and workflow runs in natural language.

What you need first

  • A GitHub account
  • An MCP host such as VS Code, Claude Code or Cursor
  • For local use: Docker and a GitHub personal access token

Steps

  1. Add a server named github of type http with the URL https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ to your host's MCP config
  2. Sign in with OAuth, or pass a personal access token in the Authorization header
  3. Ask the agent about open issues, recent commits or a PR

Prompt for your agent

Connect github/github-mcp-server (remote) to my MCP host, then list the open issues in <owner/repo> labeled bug, grouped by area, with a one-line suggested next step for each.

Caveat.
