How to run the GitHub MCP server locally in Docker with GitHub MCP Server

Run GitHub's server on your machine with your own token, for hosts that do not support the remote server.

Short answer: Install Docker and create a personal access token; then Store it in your shell with export GITHUB_PAT=your_token_here and add any .env file to .gitignore; For Claude Code: claude mcp add github -e GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN=$GITHUB_PAT -- docker run -i --rm -e GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN ghcr.io/github/github-mcp-server. All steps.

Credentials. Keep the token in the environment and out of committed files; it acts as you on GitHub.
