How to answer agent approvals and questions from the HUD with Agent Hud Open

Allow, deny or answer an agent's request from the HUD and jump back to its session in one click.

Who it is forA developer working in another app who needs to approve a command or answer a question from an agent without losing focus.

The problemAn agent waits on an approval or question in a terminal window the developer is not looking at, so the work stalls.

The outcomeEach pending request appears on the HUD with its command, file or diff, and can be answered there, with a click back to the session when needed.

What you need first

  • A Mac running macOS 14 or later
  • Xcode or the Xcode Command Line Tools with a Swift 6 toolchain
  • Git, to clone the repository
  • At least one supported agent installed and signed in, such as Claude Code or Codex

Steps

  1. Run make run from the Agent Hud Open folder to open the app.
  2. Install and sign in to the agent you want to monitor, such as Claude Code or Codex, so Agent HUD can find it.
  3. When a request appears, read the command, file, edit diff or tool input it asks about on the HUD.
  4. Choose Deny, Allow once, or Always allow where the agent offers a rule, or pick an option to answer a question.
  5. Click the session's title or Return to session to go back to its thread, tab or iTerm2 pane.

Prompt for your agent

In the agent-hud-open repository, run `make run` and confirm the app is open. Trigger one approval request from Claude Code or Codex, then verify the request appears on the HUD with its command or diff and report what options it offers.

Caveat. Codex approvals need its hook trusted in Codex, and a request you leave alone returns to the agent's own prompt after 10 minutes.
