Credentials. Exposing the local endpoint through a Tunnel or remote MCP connection gives a remote caller access bounded by your local Codex authorization, so use an authenticated Tunnel and review the permission ceiling in SECURITY.md first.
Who it is forA developer who wants ChatGPT to work on a local codebase from the normal Chat window without moving the task into another app.
The problemKeeping project rules and tool access in a second workflow means repeating setup and switching context for every change.
The outcomeChatGPT can inspect the project, edit files, run bounded commands and Git, and verify results, reusing existing Codex Skills and project rules.
What you need first
- Node.js 22 or newer
- A working local Codex installation (Codex Desktop is optional if a working CLI or runtime is available)
- A supported platform: Windows, Apple Silicon macOS (arm64), or Ubuntu Linux (x64) Technical Preview
- A ChatGPT plan; Plus and Pro have been verified working
- An authenticated Tunnel or remote MCP endpoint, plus a ChatGPT custom app or developer-mode MCP connection, so ChatGPT can reach your local Codexless
Steps
- Clone or download the Codexless source tree for the release you want, then run
.\bin\codexless-install.cmdon Windows orsh ./bin/codexless-install.shon Apple Silicon macOS. - Check your project with
& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Codexless\bin\codexless-doctor.cmd" --cwd "C:\path\to\your\project"on Windows, or"$HOME/Library/Application Support/Codexless/app/bin/codexless-doctor.sh" --cwd "/path/to/your/project"on macOS. - Start the HTTP service with
& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Codexless\bin\codexless-http.cmd"on Windows, or"$HOME/Library/Application Support/Codexless/app/bin/codexless-http.sh"on macOS. - Expose the local endpoint through an authenticated Tunnel or remote MCP endpoint and connect it to ChatGPT as a custom app or developer-mode MCP connection.
- In a normal ChatGPT Chat, ask for a specific change in your project and review the files it reports editing.

Using the Codexless repository at https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless, install it on this machine, run the doctor check against <project-path>, and report which local project tools ChatGPT can now call. Verify that the doctor check passes before reporting success.
Caveat. Codexless is an independent project, not an OpenAI product, and the README says it does not silently widen Codex trust or configure your Tunnel for you.
