How to let ChatGPT work in your signed-in Chrome or Edge with Codexless

Have ChatGPT read pages, click, type, and download in the browser profile you select.

Short answer: Complete the Codexless install and start the HTTP service as described in the setup for your platform; then install the ChatGPT browser extension in Chrome or Edge, and enable it only in the profile you intend to use; open ChatGPT's Agent permissions and set Browsing to the level you want, such as Requires approval for new sites. All steps.

Credentials. Browser work uses your selected local profile and its existing site login state, so ChatGPT can act inside accounts you are already signed into.

Who it is forA user who needs ChatGPT to act on a website that requires their existing login, such as a portal or dashboard, within a single Chat.

The problemDoing browser steps by hand for a repeated web task is slow, and most AI browser tools cannot use your existing signed-in profile.

The outcomeChatGPT reads tabs and screenshots, navigates, clicks, enters text, and prepares uploads or downloads in the selected Chrome or Edge profile.

What you need first

  • Node.js 22 or newer
  • A working local Codex installation (Codex Desktop is optional if a working CLI or runtime is available)
  • A supported platform: Windows, Apple Silicon macOS (arm64), or Ubuntu Linux (x64) Technical Preview
  • A ChatGPT plan; Plus and Pro have been verified working
  • An authenticated Tunnel or remote MCP endpoint, plus a ChatGPT custom app or developer-mode MCP connection, so ChatGPT can reach your local Codexless

Steps

  1. Complete the Codexless install and start the HTTP service as described in the setup for your platform.
  2. Install the ChatGPT browser extension in Chrome or Edge, and enable it only in the profile you intend to use.
  3. Open ChatGPT's Agent permissions and set Browsing to the level you want, such as Requires approval for new sites.
  4. If you need local file upload, enable Allow access to file URLs in the ChatGPT browser extension settings.
  5. In Chat, ask ChatGPT to open a specific page, perform the named steps, and report the result.

Prompt for your agent

Using the Codexless repository at https://github.com/liyana31811/Codexless, ask ChatGPT to open <site-url> in the connected browser profile, complete <task>, and report the final page state. Verify the result by reading the page or a viewport screenshot before reporting completion.

Caveat. Codexless does not expose arbitrary JavaScript, raw selectors, arbitrary coordinates, or unrestricted keyboard input, and if multiple Chrome profiles expose extension backends it fails closed instead of guessing.
