How to run one command on several machines at once with Muxin

Send one shell command to a group of machines and read each output side by side.

Short answer: Make sure each target machine is added in Muxin and reachable over ssh; then open the Run page with ⌃6 (Alt on Linux and Windows); type the command, for example df -h / or brew upgrade, and select the machines to run it on. All steps.

Authorization notice. Muxin is dual-use. Only use it on software, sites and systems you own or have explicit permission to test.

Who it is forA person who looks after a few personal or office machines and needs the same check or update run on each.

The problemRepeating the same command over ssh on every machine is slow, and the outputs get mixed up.

The outcomeEach machine's output and exit status appear side by side as the command runs, so you can spot the one that failed.

What you need first

  • A Mac, Linux or Windows 11 machine to run Muxin on, with the app installed from the latest release or built from source
  • SSH access to each target machine using your system ssh, keys or ~/.ssh/config aliases
  • A GitHub login through the gh tool if you want GitHub inbox, issue and runner features
  • For self-hosted runners, a GitHub organization you can register runners with

Steps

  1. Make sure each target machine is added in Muxin and reachable over ssh.
  2. Open the Run page with ⌃6 (Alt on Linux and Windows).
  3. Type the command, for example df -h / or brew upgrade, and select the machines to run it on.
  4. Read each machine's output as it arrives, and check the exit status shown for each one.
  5. To run it on just one machine, right-click that machine in the sidebar and choose Run a command.

Prompt for your agent

Using the Muxin repo at LumaryLabsLLC/muxin, run the command `df -h /` on the machines <machine-list> from the Run page. Report each machine's disk output and exit status, and flag any machine with a failed exit status.

Caveat. Run uses your login shell from your home folder on each machine, so commands must work there, and machines that are offline will show as unreachable instead of running.
