How to send tasks to your bot by email, text or phone call with Bops

Email, text or call your main bot's own address or number on Pro or Max to get work done remotely.

Credentials. Anyone who emails or texts the bot's address could try to send tasks, so only you should hold its address and number, since the README says only you can give it work.

Who it is forA busy owner or manager away from the Mac who needs a quick task done and wants to send it from a phone or inbox.

The problemWork comes up when you are away from the app, and you need a way to hand it off without opening the desktop app.

The outcomeYour main bot does the task on its computer, emails you back when it's done, and texts you the results when you talk to it by phone.

What you need first

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (required for the app and for self-hosting)
  • A Bops account, signed in with Google, email or Orgo
  • For self-hosting: Node 22 or newer, an Orgo account, an OpenAI API key and a restricted OpenAI key with a spend limit for tasks (OPENAI_EXECUTOR_API_KEY)
  • For texts, calls and a bot email address: a Pro or Max plan

Steps

  1. Subscribe to Pro or Max in Account and usage, since bot email and phone numbers are included only on those plans.
  2. Note the email address for your main bot, which ends in Bops.bot.
  3. Email the bot a clear task describing what you want done.
  4. Wait for the bot's reply by email, or text your bot's phone number to check progress.
  5. Approve any action the bot asks about before it sends, creates or pays.

Prompt for your agent

Using the OrgoAI/bops repo, draft an email to the main bot at <bot-email-address> asking it to <task-description>. Expected output is the drafted email text and a note on whether the bot is expected to reply by email when done. Verify that the plan includes a bot email address before sending, since the README limits this to Pro and Max.

Caveat. Bops runs on your Mac, so while it is away, callers to your bot's number get a bot that takes a message instead of doing the work.
