How to self-host the Bops server on your Mac with your keys with Bops

Run the Bops app and server locally, calling OpenAI and Orgo directly with keys you control.

Credentials. Your OpenAI and Orgo keys sit in .env.local on your Mac, so keep that file private and use a restricted, spend-limited key for tasks.

Who it is forA developer or technical operator who wants to run Bops on their own Mac, use their own provider keys, and inspect or change the code.

The problemHosted tools hide how the bots call their providers and where data is kept, so some teams want to run the stack themselves.

The outcomeA local Bops app and server on port 3210, with state kept in .data/ on your Mac and provider calls made with your own keys.

What you need first

  • A Mac with Apple silicon (required for the app and for self-hosting)
  • A Bops account, signed in with Google, email or Orgo
  • For self-hosting: Node 22 or newer, an Orgo account, an OpenAI API key and a restricted OpenAI key with a spend limit for tasks (OPENAI_EXECUTOR_API_KEY)
  • For texts, calls and a bot email address: a Pro or Max plan

Steps

  1. Clone the OrgoAI/bops repository and open its folder in a terminal. (inferred, check the README)
  2. Run npm run setup to install dependencies and create .env.local from .env.example.
  3. In .env.local, fill in OPENAI_API_KEY, OPENAI_EXECUTOR_API_KEY and ORGO_API_KEY.
  4. Run npm run app to open the app, which starts the server on port 3210.
  5. Open Settings and then You, and add your name and a line about yourself.

Prompt for your agent

In the OrgoAI/bops repository, run `npm run setup`, then confirm that .env.local exists and that OPENAI_API_KEY, OPENAI_EXECUTOR_API_KEY and ORGO_API_KEY are set to <your-key-values> without printing the key values. Expected output is a running app started with `npm run app` on port 3210. Verify the server answers on port 3210 before reporting success.

Caveat. Self-hosted Bops needs an Orgo account, an OpenAI key and Apple silicon, and the Bops plans do not apply because you pay each provider directly.
