Replit, one of the best known AI coding platforms, is no longer working with Anthropic. CEO Amjad Masad confirmed it during an onstage interview at TechCrunch Disrupt, when asked whether the OpenAI partnership Replit announced in August meant it had moved away from Anthropic. His answer was a plain yes.
Masad framed the decision around several reasons, including cost, the shape of the partnership, and performance. Until now there had been no public sign that Replit had stopped using Anthropic's models, which have long been popular for coding.
The same week, Masad also talked up his idea of the self-driving company, where software agents run much of a business. Losing a high-profile coding customer is notable for Anthropic, whose models are closely tied to the coding tools market.
For developers, the bigger point is that the coding tools they use every day are quietly swapping the models underneath them. The same prompt can produce different code from one month to the next, depending on which lab offered the better deal.
Our take
Coding platforms live and die on model cost per task. When the margins get tight, loyalty to the best brand of model goes out the window.
