The US just banned DeepSeek from federal agencies, two days after its best model yet

The DeepSeek ban. Plus: Amazon takes on Nvidia's software moat, Tenstorrent's $1.5B, MiniMax's $0.15 model, and Anthropic's shrinking junior hiring.

Policy & LawEveryone covered this

The US barred civilian federal agencies from using DeepSeek.

The Trump administration told civilian agencies to stop using products or services from the Chinese AI startup, citing national security risks tied to its operations in China. The decision landed just days after DeepSeek released V4.1-Flash, a cheap model that DeepSeek says beats Claude Opus 5 on one coding benchmark.

Our take

Washington waited for DeepSeek to become good before acting. Cheap and capable is what turns a model from a curiosity into a procurement problem, and this is the first sign the policy response is now tracking model releases within days.
