SoftBank Group plans to invest $50 billion in Malaysia, focused on artificial intelligence, new technologies and data centers, according to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Bloomberg first reported his remarks, and CNBC, Nikkei Asia and The Business Times followed. SoftBank had not commented publicly when those reports ran.
Anwar said on Saturday, Oct. 24, that he held a video conference with SoftBank chief Masayoshi Son on Tuesday, and that Son had picked locations. "He said he had chosen Sarawak, Kuching, and peninsular Malaysia to expand investment in what would be among the largest investments in the region, worth US$50 billion," Anwar said in a speech in Melaka, as reported by The Business Times. Asked what areas it would cover, he answered: "Artificial intelligence, new technology and data centres." No structure, timeline or partners have been disclosed, so this is a stated plan rather than a signed deal.
The plan builds on earlier moves. CNBC notes that SoftBank signed a framework agreement this month with Grab and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad to explore AI and digital infrastructure in Sarawak. SoftBank is already working on a $500 billion data center project in Ohio and a project in France worth up to 75 billion euros, according to The Business Times.
Malaysia has become a major data center destination. Google announced a $2 billion investment in 2024 for its first data center and cloud region there, Amazon Web Services plans to invest $6.2 billion through 2038, and Microsoft announced $2.2 billion for cloud and AI infrastructure, CNBC reports. The Malaysian Investment Development Authority counts 385.7 billion ringgit, about $94 billion, of data center related investment from 2021 through the first half of 2026. The government wants Malaysia to be an "AI nation" by 2030.
For developers and AI builders, the significance is where compute capacity is heading. Southeast Asia is turning into a serious hosting region, which could mean more cloud regions, lower latency and more GPU supply for teams serving users in Asia.
What comes next is a formal announcement from SoftBank with real numbers and sites. Until then, treat the $50 billion as a headline figure from the prime minister. If you serve Asian users, it is worth tracking which cloud regions open in Malaysia over the next year.
