How to find the office file that answers your question with Genoffice

Search your work folder by names, folders and full text, with optional Jev reranking of the top hits.

Credentials. The Jev reranking key is stored in GenOffice settings, so keep that machine and its settings file under your control.

Who it is forSomeone whose work folder holds hundreds of documents and who needs the one file that states a specific policy or number.

The problemPlain keyword search returns files that share words with the question but do not answer it.

The outcomeThe home screen lists the files that best answer the question first, and you open the right document in seconds.

What you need first

  • A computer running macOS, Windows or Linux, with the GenOffice app downloaded from the releases page
  • Either a Genspark sign-in or an API key from a supported provider such as Claude, OpenAI or Gemini, or a local OpenAI-compatible server
  • For the agent use cases: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI or another supported coding agent installed on the same computer

Steps

  1. Open GenOffice and point the work folder at the folder that holds your files.
  2. Type your question into the home screen search box and read the list of local hits.
  3. Go to Settings → AI Media & Search → Local file search and turn on Jev search reranking if you want the top 20 hits reordered by the model.
  4. Pick OpenRouter or TypeSafe direct, paste your key, and select Test connection.
  5. Open the top file and confirm that it answers your question.

Prompt for your agent

In the GenOffice app, search the work folder <folder path> for documents that answer '<question>' and turn on Jev reranking if a key is set. Expected output: the top five files in order. Verify that the first file contains the answer by opening it.

Caveat. The index stays on the device, but when Jev reranking is on, excerpts of the top 20 hits are sent to the reranking service you chose.
