Who it is forA developer who uses Codex, Claude Code and other agents and has lost track of which skills exist where.
The problemSkill libraries sit in different directories and layouts, some copied, some stale, some needing dependencies that were never installed.
The outcomeA clear inventory showing each skill's category, sync state, source and any missing dependencies.
What you need first
- Python 3.11 or newer
- Local SKILL.md skill folders for Codex, Claude Code or other supported agents
- pipx or pip to install the agent-skill-sync package
Steps
- Run
pipx install agent-skill-syncto install the CLI in an isolated environment. - Run
skillsync statusto see what you have and in what state. - Run
skillsync scan --category Bto list only the skills that need external dependencies. - Run
skillsync scan --jsonif you want the inventory in machine-readable form.
Prompt for your agent
Use the agent-skill-sync repo to list all SKILL.md files on this machine. Run `skillsync scan --json` and save the output to <output-file>. Expected output: a JSON inventory with category and source for each skill. Verify that the count of skills matches what `skillsync status` reports.
Caveat. Classification is heuristic and conservative, so treat each category as a reasoned suggestion and check the shown reason before acting on it.
