How to save a chat session and resume it later with Chat UI

Export a conversation to a file and import it to continue where you stopped.

Who it is forA user who has a long LLM conversation to finish later and needs to keep it, since the page does not save history on its own.

The problemChat history is cleared when the page closes, so unsaved work is lost.

The outcomeA saved history file that restores the earlier conversation when imported into a new page session.

What you need first

  • A web browser
  • The main HTML file and the configuration file from the Chat_UI repository
  • Access to an LLM API endpoint and the settings it needs, as named in the configuration file

Steps

  1. Open the chat page and load the configuration file.
  2. Have the conversation you need.
  3. Click the export button to save the history to a file before closing the page.
  4. Open the chat page again and load the configuration file.
  5. Click the import button and choose the saved history file to continue the chat.

Prompt for your agent

Using the Chat_UI repository at KODAMA-TECHNOLOGY/Chat_UI, export the chat history from the page to <history-file>, close the page, then reopen it and import <history-file>. Report that the earlier messages are visible again and verify that the message count matches before export.

Caveat. The README states that chat history is not saved automatically and is lost when the page is closed, so export before you close the page.
