4 use cases

  • Alert when the garage door stays open

Get a phone notification when a camera shows the garage door open for 10 minutes.

    View prompt
Using the VisionState repo at https://github.com/oleost/VisionState, set up a garage door state sensor for the camera <camera_entity> and a Home Assistant automation that notifies <notify_service> after the door is open for 10 minutes. Expected output: a sensor.garage_door entity and one automation YAML block. Verify that the sensor reports open, closed and halfway in the Home Assistant entity list.
  • Read a water or gas meter into the Energy dashboard

Point an ESP32-CAM at a meter and log its total and rate in Home Assistant.

    View prompt
Using the VisionState repo at https://github.com/oleost/VisionState, configure a reading sensor for the camera <camera_entity> on a <water or gas or power> meter. Expected output: a meter total entity that appears in the Home Assistant Energy dashboard. Verify that each new value is higher than or equal to the previous one.
  • Track who is home and whose car is in the drive

Get on/off sensors for named people and your own car from a driveway camera.

    View prompt
Using the VisionState repo at https://github.com/oleost/VisionState, set up object and person sensors for the camera <camera_entity>, with named people <person_names>. Expected output: an on/off sensor for each named person and for the car object. Verify that face recognition is enabled only for the camera you chose.
  • Read a washer's minutes-left display into Home Assistant

Turn a appliance display's remaining minutes into a sensor you can automate on.

    View prompt
Using the VisionState repo at https://github.com/oleost/VisionState, create a reading sensor for the camera <camera_entity> that reads the minutes-left display on <appliance>. Expected output: a numeric sensor that matches the display. Verify that the sensor value matches the display on three separate checks.

How to use Vision State

  1. Check you have what it needs: Home Assistant OS or Home Assistant Supervised, version 2025.10 or newer; The Mosquitto broker app and the MQTT integration in Home Assistant; A camera that Home Assistant can see as a camera entity, or an RTSP or HTTP snapshot URL.
  2. Open oleost/VisionState on GitHub and read the README and license.
  3. Click Add repository in the Vision State README, or add https://github.com/oleost/VisionState under Settings → Apps → App store → ⋮ → Repositories.
  4. Install Vision State, start it, and open it from the sidebar.
  5. Choose New sensor, pick the garage camera, draw a region around the door, and select the state option.
  6. Click a few example images for open, closed and halfway so the sensor learns the states in about a second.

These steps come from our top use case, Alert when the garage door stays open, which also has a copy-paste agent prompt.
