Who it is forA researcher or analyst with a folder of markdown notes on people, organisations, or threads who needs to see how they fit together.
The problemThe notes hold the facts, but the connections between them only live in the author's head.
The outcomeA local map in the browser where frontmatter entries appear as nodes and wikilinks appear as edges.
What you need first
- Node.js and npm installed, so that npx works
- A markdown file or a folder of markdown notes
- A modern web browser
Steps
- Install Node.js and open a terminal in the folder that holds your notes.
- Run
npx md2hd notes/to map the whole folder, ornpx md2hd map.mdfor a single file. - Wait for the browser tab to open and look at the Overview surface at the foot of the canvas.
- Save a markdown file and refresh the tab to confirm the map re-reads from disk.
Prompt for your agent
Use the md2hd repo at evan-steinhilb/md2hd. Run `npx md2hd <placeholder>` on the notes folder I name, then report the number of nodes you can see in the Overview. Verify the map opened in the browser on 127.0.0.1 before you report back.
Caveat. Md2 HD only draws nodes from frontmatter blocks and wikilinks, so notes without that structure will show as prose and not as a map.
