How to calibrate a physical robot link in safe steps with Flybrain Robot Bridge

Set motor limits and send commands to a lifted robot only after dry-run checks pass.

Who it is forA robotics builder with a lifted test robot and an Atom Matrix board who wants to try the UDP link.

The problemSending commands to a real robot without limits, a watchdog or a power cutoff can damage equipment or injure people.

The outcomeA config.yaml with calibrated limits and a single supervised --send run, after the firmware hooks are confirmed to be implemented.

What you need first

  • Python 3.11 or newer
  • git and a terminal
  • A webcam or a video file, optional, for live or recorded input
  • A calibrated robot, network link and independent motor power cutoff, only if you plan to use --send

Steps

  1. Confirm the firmware hooks are implemented, since the README says the firmware is disarmed until they are.
  2. Run python -m flybrain_robot.main --synthetic --dry-run --steps 20 and check the output.
  3. Copy the example config with cp config.example.yaml config.yaml and set robot_ip, pc_port, robot_port and calibrated motor limits.
  4. With the robot lifted off the ground and an independent motor power cutoff ready, run python -m flybrain_robot.main --camera 0 --config config.yaml --send.
  5. Stop the run with Ctrl+C and confirm the best-effort stop packet and the robot's own 500 ms watchdog halt the motors.

Prompt for your agent

In the flybrain-robot-bridge repo, copy config.example.yaml to config.yaml and set robot_ip, pc_port, robot_port and motor limits from the values I give you for <robot-ip>. Run the dry-run checks first and report the output. Do not run with --send unless I confirm the robot is lifted and the power cutoff is in place.

Caveat. The README says the UDP link has no authentication, reliability or replay protection, and no hardware test has been performed, so the physical link is untested.
