How to adapt Free My TV to a different TV brand with an AI agent with Free My TV

Have an AI agent read a non-listed TV, update the app's debloat and shelf lists, and walk through a test.

Who it is forA person with a Google TV or Android TV from a brand the README does not cover, who knows how to open a folder in Claude Code.

The problemEach TV brand ships its own promo apps and home screen, so the default lists do not match every model.

The outcomeThe app's lists match the user's TV, with promo apps turned off and the live TV app set for that brand.

What you need first

  • A Google TV or Android TV (Android 9 or newer), an LG TV (webOS 3 or newer), or a Samsung TV from 2017 or newer (Tizen 3+)
  • A computer on the same Wi-Fi as the TV
  • Developer mode enabled on the TV, with the TV's IP address written down
  • Claude Code, or for the manual route a JDK 17+, the Android SDK command-line tools and adb

Steps

  1. Clone the repo with git clone https://github.com/simbasjungles/free-my-tv && cd free-my-tv and open the folder in Claude Code.
  2. Say: set it up for my Sony (or your brand). Let the agent read the TV, find its home screen and its promo apps.
  3. Review the proposed changes to DEBLOAT and PROTECTED in app/src/io/freemytv/HomeMode.java, and SHELF and LIVE_TV_APPS in app/src/io/freemytv/HomeApps.java.
  4. Build with ./build.sh and install with adb install -r FreeMyTV.apk.
  5. Walk through the test the agent gives you, and confirm that picture, sound, inputs and remote pairing still work.

Prompt for your agent

In the free-my-tv repo, read CLAUDE.md and update the DEBLOAT, PROTECTED, SHELF and LIVE_TV_APPS lists for the TV brand <BRAND> at <TV_IP>. Expected output: edited lists in HomeMode.java and HomeApps.java and a built FreeMyTV.apk. Verify that no picture, sound, input, remote, Google service or Play Store package appears in DEBLOAT.

Caveat. Editing the debloat lists is the risky part, so the agent must keep picture, sound, inputs, remote pairing, Google services and the Play Store on the protected list.
